Not that long ago, water was a specialty item in a grocery store. Today, displays of bottled water rival that of soft drinks. How did this happen?
The industrial progress of the last 200 years has greatly jeopardized
Unfortunately, these water-borne illnesses are often mistaken for more common problems. The crytosporidium outbreak which killed more than 100 people in Milwaukee was originally thought to be a case of the flu.
Whether you realize it or not, your water may be making you sick.
Did You Know?
The authorities that regulate public water supplies have established acceptable levels of various pollutants in our tap water, including chemicals and even human waste.
According to the Centers for Disease Control & Prevention in Atlanta, 1,200 deaths and more than 7 million illnesses a year may be caused by microbiological contaminants in tap water, many of which are never reported to doctors.
The EPA estimates that 155 million Americans are potentially at risk from cryptosporidium, a parasitic cyst primarily spawned from animal feces. These microorganisms have a protective shell, making them immune to chlorine, the most commonly used disinfectant in municipal water treatment plants and private wells.
Chlorine exposure from one shower is equal to an entire day's amount of drinking the same water. Besides being absorbed through our skin, chlorine vaporizes in the shower, where we inhale it, pumping it directly into our blood stream. Not only are we exposing ourselves to trihalomethines but excessive amounts of chlorine can burn the eyes, cause skin conditions and trigger allergic reactions.
What is MTBE and How Does it Affect Us?
MTBE (Methyl Tert-Butyl Ether) is the chemical gas additive used to make "clean-burning" (reformulated) gasoline. In 1990, Congress ordered that 2% MTBE (by weight of oxygen) must be added to gasoline to comply with the "Clean Air Act." That's the equivalent of one gallon of MTBE for every 10 gallons of gas.
Between 75-100 million people live in areas where MTBE is being used. In the Raleigh, NC area, it's used in the months of December through February, although other areas of the country use it more frequently. So if it's cleaning up the air by reducing automobile emissions, what's the problem?
MTBE has leaked from hundreds of underground gasoline storage tanks, contaminating thousands of public water supplies and private wells throughout the country. On Long Island, NY, more than 400 gasoline tanks have polluted 100 city water systems. In Santa Monica, CA, virtually all the H2O was undrinkable, forcing the town to buy water from the Colorado River at an annual expense of $3,000,000.
In Glenville, CA, a private well tested for 20,000 "parts per billion" of MTBE, 500 times higher than what the EPA recommends. In Santa Monica and Lake Tahoe, MTBE was present at some level in 20% of all urban wells and an internal study by Chevron showed that it had contaminated ground water in 80% of the 400 sites the company tested!
MTBE travels through ground water faster than other chemicals, allowing it to spread quickly. It's also very difficult to remove from water. Filters are obsolete and boiling water with MTBE causes it to aerate and, like chlorine, its gases are absorbed into our lungs, as well as our skin when showering. The most common symptoms from exposure are intestinal problems and skin rashes.
Today, MTBE is the second most common water pollutant in the United States, yet nothing has been done to determine the potential health consequences to us. Our government has yet to require testing for it, even though it was first detected in New Jersey in 1980. In fact, the only tests ever done were in Italy six years ago on lab animals. The results were alarming...high doses caused leukemia, lymphoma and testicular cancer. It should come as no surprise that the EPA suspects MTBE is a possible carcinogen.
Toxicologist Dr. Bernard Goldstein said that studies should have been done before the government allowed large quantities of MTBE to be put in gasoline. He said, "This is a classic case of how not to protect the public." He then added, "If I wanted to poison as many Americans as possible, I'd put something in gasoline."
And don't blame the oil companies. In a 60 Minutes episode which aired on 1/16/00, the president of Sunoco said he'd love to stop putting MTBE in their gasoline. However, unless the requirements for the Clean Air Act are changed, he and the other gas companies have no other choice but to continue using the controversial chemical.
And it doesn't take much to ruin a water supply...less than one pint of MTBE can contaminate 5,000,000 gallons of drinking water.
At Mike Lee's Clean Machine, our solution to MTBE and other water pollutants is as old as the earth itself. Nature. Not ordinary filtered water; not bottled water; not distilled water. Just, pure, fresh water right from your kitchen faucet. There's no waste, no hassle - just safe, purified water at the touch of a fingertip.
Our unique process of ozone, ultraviolet light, photo-oxidation and carbon filtration is redefining how water should be cleaned. In Vero Beach, Florida, the citrus industry has been using ozone for years. In water, ozone disinfects 3,000 times faster than chlorine and doesn't leave a chemical residue on the fruit, making it safer for the consumer.
The UV light disrupts the cell processes in microorganisms, making it either impossible for them to reproduce or killing them on contact. For safety purposes, the UV light is blocked by the polycarbonate housing of the water unit.
Photo-oxidation is the process by which ozonated water is irradiated by ultraviolet light. This patented process creates a lethal environment for a variety of water contaminants.
The activated carbon filter provides extra protection against chemicals like chlorine and traps the remains of parasitic cysts like cryptosporidium.
Our self-cleaning water purification system can attach to your existing faucet or can be stored under the sink by using an auxiliary faucet. The choice is yours. Either method is easy to use and you'll help the environment by eliminating the need to recycle or dispose of containers.
We also offer the most advanced whole-house water purifier on the market. We purify the water as it enters the house, so you don't need any filters elsewhere.
We even have you covered in the shower. Our new showerhead with a built-in, replacable filter is the first of its kind. It features an adjustable head with jet-spray massage and a limited lifetime warranty. It removes chlorine, lead, sediment, rust and even reduces those nasty odors like hydrogen sulphide (rotten egg smell).
As you can see, when it comes to improving the quality of your water, Mike Lee's Clean Machine is "clearly" your best choice. We offer free trials of our countertop models and showerheads in the greater Raleigh, NC area and can easily arrange for a demonstration virtually anywhere in North America.
There's nothing better than "Try Before You Buy". We provide the necessary information to help you make the best choice for your needs and we look forward to your questions and solving your problems.
